The Wine Enthusiast; 93p
Astrales, one of Ribera’s best wineries, bottled a structured, serious wine in 2009. Aromas of coconut, asphalt, cola and gritty black fruits set up a palate with oaky, dark, spicy flavors of blackberry, tire rubber and mild herbal accents. Oak and char define the finish on this potent, modern-style Tempranillo. Drink now through 2022.
Tanzer; 93
Bright ruby. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes candied red berries, blood orange and potpourri. Smooth and seamless on the palate, with intense raspberry liqueur and cherry flavors complemented by notes of clove and star anise. Sweet and focused on the gently tannic, very persistent finish, with the floral note returning.
The grapes come from small farms with vines aged of 25-80 years and they are harvested manually. Its short maceration and fermentation take place with indigenous yeasts. It is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, among which 30% are renewed each year. Only one racking is conducted during the malolactic fermentation and between one and two rackins, during the ageing. This wine is clarified with egg albumin and bottled unfiltered.
