Target
Syrah Cortona

Fabrizio Dionisio’s dream arose many years ago, when he was only a boy fallen in love with Cortona, Tuscany, country and his land, but became something real in the second half of the 1990s, when the old vineyards (sangiovese and trebbiano, 1.300 vines per hectare), by now obsolete, were grubbed up.

Beginning in 2000, new vineyards were gradually planted on both estate properties, relying on completely up-to-date methods, plant materials, and practices, and focusing on Syrah. In particular this grape variety, far from being simply imported from elsewhere, is considered authentically local, perhaps a viticultural heritage (together with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) of the French occupation of the area during the Napoleonic era, two hundred years ago.

Many scholars believe in this theory; no doubt that it is a fascinating one.

Certainly Syrah has acclimated itself masterfully to the quite distinctive weather and soil conditions of the Cortona terroir, and yields superlative quality when cultivated with the particular attention it requires.

Syrah from Cortona is indeed unanimously considered the best of Italy, and this small area in the south-east of Tuscany (neighbour to Brunello di Montalcino, Nobile di Montepulciano and Chianti, domains of sangiovese) is called the Italian “Cotes du Rhone”.

The objective of Fabrizio Dionisio —set right from the start and in close agreement with Federico Curtaz and Attilio Pagli—is to produce wines that are absolutely artisanal. Artisanal also means, in the strictest and most noble meaning of that term, utilising the most up-to-date practices and technologies, but working always and only manually, at every step of the way, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, and with uncompromising respect for the environment, for the earth, and for its fruits—with their matchless sensory uniqueness.

In order to create wines “with a soul”, not at all standardized ones.

The purpose was in fact to make -keeping up with the growth of the vineyards- a great Syrah which could compete with the best ones in the world, but always being clearly Tuscan, indeed from Cortona, and that was able to express in an original way its terroir of origin, counting on the character, minerality and elegance that only ancient and really suited soils can give to a wine.

90++
