wel een heel speciaal verhaal achter deze wijn. Ik pik dit even van een Britse site :

Chiselled from limestone soils, this is a beautifully savoury expression of Cabernet Franc, lovely fruit, earthiness with a silky texture and great structure.

Clos Cristal, one of the most well known wineries / domaine has closed its doors for good. Clos Cristal, a very unique vineyard was a donation from the late Antoine Cristal to «Les Hospices de Saumur», the local hospital of Saumur in 1928.. Many winemakers were in some way involved in a project at Clos Cristal and many of them found the inspiration to star his/her own projects from working there

After a hard battle to try and keep the existing project going at the Clos, the owner of the vineyard (the Hospital of Saumur)and some people of the city decided to put a stop to everything. Even though several options have been presented, they still decided to withdraw the rights from the association to continue their existing activity at the Clos, leaving the vineyard and the wines in a critical condition.

Côme Isambert with help from Francois Saint-lo & Olivier Schwirtz and lot’s of other friends are trying to save the work that has been done under the leadership of Eric and the Association. They have purchased the wine from the last vintages of Clos Cristal that was in the cellar and bottled it without additions, under a protest Cristal Closed label designed by Justine Saint-lo. These wines are history in a bottle.

Pop and pour : de eerste snif tovert een glimlach op mijn gezicht. Dit is Cabernet Franc zoals ik hem wil, puur en aérien, zoals de Fransen zeggen. Maar ook wel een boerenerfluchtje. Deze wijn is gebotteld zonder toegevoegde sulfiet. Dat gaat er echter wat uit na open staan.

In de mond is dit heel fris, luchtig en vooral fris met mooie zuurtjes. Weeral weten de de Fransen dat beter te zeggen : "cristallin" is het woord dat me tebinnen schiet.

Maar dan in de afdronk wel weer een onaangenaam smaakje. En ik vermoed dat dit is wat ze zin het Engels mouse taint noemen. Ik heb dit al eerder geproefd maar kon het dan nooit benoemen. De beschrijving die voor mij het dichtst in de buurt komt is de adem van een puppy (puppy breath). Het speciale hieraan is dat je het niet ruikt, maar alleen smaakt in de afdronk. Anderen beschrijven het als muizenkooi, of vuile sokken.

Gelukkig is het niet dominant in deze wijn en is er ook ruimte ook de schoonheid van het fruit en de zuren te appreciëren, maar bij mij moet dit toch niet al te vaak voorvallen.
